Dog leashes are necessary and required, and serve many purposes including pet control and safety. I'm going to add one more - accessorizing! These Nylon Dog Leashes from Amazon cover all the bases coming in many lengths, widths, and colors and they are super affordable so you can buy a few!

Leash Length & Size

Width: Small dogs do best with a thinner, lighter leash. Larger, stronger dogs like golden retrievers need a wider, sturdier

one that won't dig into your hand.

Length: A standard 6-foot leash works well for most neighborhood walks and trails and allows room for both you and your dog to move. A shorter leash gives you more control in busy places, like a downtown sidewalk or a crowded trailhead. Leashes required for therapy dog visits are required to be 4-feet or less as noted by the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.

Hardware: Look for a strong, smooth-closing clip that's sized for your dog. A tiny clip on a big dog is a weak spot.

Pick a Color With Purpose!

Color is more than style. A bright leash is easy to spot on a trail or in the snow which matters if a leash gets dropped or your dog slips away. I use a darker colored leash for outdoor street runs as it typically gets dirty with the elements or when I drop it to take off my gloves or readjust my running gear. That being said, we have a red leash to match her therapy dog vest and a pink leash which matches her green and pink daisy color! Accessorizing matters to us girls!

A Quick Tahoe Trail Reminder

There are some trails that allow off-leash time via posted signs. However, many Sierra trails, campgrounds, and beaches require dogs to be leashed. A good leash keeps your pup safe from wildlife, other dogs, and steep drop-offs, and it shows respect to the hikers you meet.
